1993 Women's Tennis Team
Class 6A State Champions
The 1993 Washburn Rural High School Girls Tennis Team was arguably one of the two best in a rich history of girls tennis at Washburn Rural. In 1992, a decision made by KSHSAA cost the team the State Championship by a single point. The following year the girls swept through the state finishing 1st in every event including City, League, Regional, and State Championships. Our #1 Doubles team lost in the final (Van Vlack-McBride) but came back in 1994 to go undefeated and win the State Championship. Danielle Knipp placed 3rd twice and 2nd twice in singles during her four years at WRHS. She is one of the two WRHS players to be All-State all four years. Kelley Roberts won the State Discus as a Junior and played on a State Championship Girls Basketball team as well as placing 4th in Doubles with Colleen Pendley. As a Freshman, Emily Lee won All-City honors and gained experience making her our team leader in 1995 and 1996. Besides all of this, they were a lot of fun and an all around great group of young ladies. "They were my Dream Team." -Coach Kevin Hedberg
