2009 Men's Soccer Team
The 2009 varsity boys' soccer team was the most successful team in school history and one of the most dominant teams in the history of high school soccer in Kansas.
The 2009 team finished the season as the Class 6A state champions, Centennial League champions, Regional champions, the KA-MO tournament champions, and as the #11 ranked team in the nation (NSCAA/Adidas poll). They won 20 games and lost just once to St. Thomas Aquinas (1-0) who was selected as the National Champions that season.
The 2009 team set a school record for goals scored (86) and for fewest goals allowed (7). They recorded 14 shutouts and never allowed a team to score more than once in a game. They also dominated play in the Centennial League as they outscored opponents 52-3 in league games. In the state championship game, they defeated Lawrence Free State 3-0 which ties the largest margin of victory in the 6A championship game in the last 15 years.
Six players were named 1st team all-city (Levi Brunton, Grant Copeland, Nick Golden, Justin Ives, Austin Jackson, and Ethan Speake), five players made 1st team all-Centennial League (Copeland, Golden, Ives, Jackson, Speake), and three players were 1st team all-state (Golden, Ives, Jackson).
The success of the 2009 season was the catalyst for the Washburn Rural boys' soccer program to be invited to participate in the top national high school tournament where they have competed against teams from Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.
