Scott Shufelberger

Mr. Scott Shufelberger graduated from Highland Park High School in 1977. In 1982, he was a proud Wildcat, earning his Bachelor's Degree. He finished his education in 1991 with his Master's Degree from Emporia State University.

In addition to the strong relationships Scott has built within the classroom, he has impacted many young athletes throughout his career on the field, court, and track. While teaching Social Studies at Topeka West from 1982-1986, Shufelberger coached basketball and football.

In 1986, Scott found his home at Washburn Rural. He became a pillar of the Rural community as he earned the respect of students and colleagues. A colleague remarked, "Shuf is one of those guys that would do anything for you. He's as selfless as they come." Scott gave his time and guidance to develop teen Christians by sponsoring Christians In Action for ten years. Scott and his wife, Lynette, who also taught in the district, sponsored prom and other dances for nearly twenty years.

He earned recognition as a highly respected coach by leading the Cross Country Team to many victories from 1986-2016. Under his lead, the 1996 Girl's Cross Country Team was the only team to have a perfect score at a city meet. This team went on to win the State Championship, and Shufelberger was named Cross Country Coach of the Year. He coached State Champs Jacob Morgan and Avery Clifton. Many of his athletes were named All State, and one runner was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year when they went on to join the KU team. Before retiring as coach, the Men's Cross Country Team had won nine straight City Titles and has continued the streak to eleven currently under the direction of the new coach, who was one of Scott's former runners. He served as assistant track coach for 29 years and assistant basketball coach for 15.

Upon retirement in 2016, Shufelberger's commitment to educating youth did not end. He serves as a substitute teacher at Maize High School and Campus High School in Wichita where his daughters teach. This Spring, Scott will step in as a long-term sub for the Professional Cooking Class taught by his daughter Cara while she goes on maternity leave. Scott and Lynette bought a condo on the lake with a boat only steps from their back door. They enjoy being close to their daughters, Lauren and Cara, their two granddaughters, Emma (5) and Stella (2), and their 4-year-old grandson, Owen.
