Veteran & Adventurer Steve Watkins Visits Auburn Elementary

Steve is a Topeka native. He has degrees from MIT, Harvard, and West Point. He served in the military and later as a conflict contractor in the Middle East. He was severely wounded and vowed to live the rest of his life as an inspiration to other wounded Veterans.

In 2015, he raced in the Iditarod. A few weeks later, he attempted to summit Mt. Everest (he was evacuated off the mountain after a deadly earthquake/avalanche hit Everest...it was the deadliest day ever on Everest and six of the people in his crew were killed.)

He ran in the Iditarod again this year. Unfortunately, he ran into some very tough conditions and fell too far behind the pack and had to be removed from the race. His latest adventure is to run for Congress.

His story is available to view at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke-kkK7KLiY

In the 3rd grade curriculum at Auburn Elementary, they read a story about climbing Mt. Everest, and previously invited Steve to come visit with the class.

That swelled into a huge unit that the 3rd graders did to learn about the Iditarod and to follow him on the race. Eventually, the whole school learned about the Iditarod.

Mr. Watkins presented to the school today about his experience and the values he's learned through his adventures. He brought one of his sled dogs and some of his gear.

Battle of the Books was held Thursday afternoon. 4 student teams and 2 teacher teams each had to read 20 books to see who could recall the most information. Raxvanderin won for the students and The Reading Rainbows won the teacher rounds. The battle between the student team and the teacher team was tough, but the The Reading Rainbows came out victorious! So proud of all the hard work and effort put out by both students and staff.
