Return to School

Update from Superintendent Dr. Scott McWilliams

The purpose of this message to all staff and parents is to provide a quick update on our first day of school. Today was the first day of school for many of our "Group A" students, and it was wonderful seeing students back at school and in classrooms. We all still have many things to learn about this new environment that we are in due to COVID-19, but while at school today, everyone did a masterful job following the safety precautions that are in place to keep students and staff safe. Thank you to our staff for having things so well prepared and safe for students today, and thank you to our parents for getting students ready for their first day of school. We look forward to welcoming many of our "Group B" students tomorrow.

We look forward to engaging with our Phase 1 Remote learning students and families as well. The Phase 2 Hybrid and Phase 1 Remote learning environments have many moving parts, but we remain committed to meeting the needs of our students, both in-person and remotely. Patience, flexibility, organization, and positivity will be key as we all search for a routine in these learning environments. By working together, we will find our way, but we must take it one step at a time.

At the time I am writing this message, nothing was reported today, August 27, as a COVID-19 related concern at school. We had a safe and productive day today.

In closing, the Shawnee County scorecard that will be released each Thursday by the Health Department had a total index score of 17 today. Based on a color-coding system, a score of 17 falls in the "red" range. The color code system moves from green (score = 0), yellow (index score between 1 and 8), orange (index score between 9 and 16), to red (index score between 17 and 24). While the scorecard is concerning, we have no reported confirmed COVID-19 cases this week with students or staff as of today. I will provide a more detailed update about the Shawnee County scorecard and Auburn-Washburn specific data in my next message.

Thank you again for making our first day with students a success. I will provide another update tomorrow (August 28).
